Right then, hands up who remembers Flashback (Amiga). O.K., keep them up if you remember Impossible Mission 2 (C 64). For you lot, just take the guy and some of the action from Flashback, set in stages from Impossible Mission 2 with the puzzles and infuriating pixel perfect jumping removed, add lots and lots of shooting and give it all a 32 bit update. For everyone else that doesn’t go misty eyed at the words “Another visitor…stay a while…stay forever!”, picture a 2D platform action arcade shooter, with the emphasis very much on the shooting, set in cut aways of buildings and (as the title suggests) elevators to move you from level to level. As usual, Taito supply impeccable attention to detail with some great animation, cool sprite scaling and rotation, amazing playability and a complete disregard for animal rights activists everywhere. Yes, the people that brought you New Zealand Story are now encouraging you to gun down dogs like, well like stinking dogs. Just turn the violence mode to hard and watch with a disturbingly satisfying feeling as you daub the walls with the claret of your next victim or have them flail around in agony as you ignite them like a Swan Vesta. You take your choice from three characters with the usual power vs. speed trade offs and differing sub-weapons, with the ability to collect various weapon/point/food power ups along the way. And, if you're so inclined, a friend can join in with you for some cool two player co-op. The order of the day here is sheer un-adulterated arcade pleasure, but don't go loading it up with the expectation of finishing it within the hour. Refreshingly, your continues are limited to three, even on easy mode, so a good lasting challenge awaits.
All in all, Elevator 2 is an excellent remake of the original, in which Taito have taken shovels full of originality, bucket loads of playability and a pinch of comedy violence to give you another creative first rate title, worthy of shelf space amongst any collection and consequently, quite difficult to track down nowadays (especially as they didn't make that many to begin with!).
