Kyukyoku Tiger aka Tiger Heli / Twin Cobra)

Also known as Ultimate Tiger, the real name is Kyukyoku Tiger. Anyway, this is Taito's superb conversion of Tiger Heli on the PC Engine and it is a simply fantastic game: one of my favourite all-time favourite vertical shooters. It's right up there with Battle Garegga for me. Whenever I have a go on my GT, this always seems to be the game that's stuck inside the machine! If I had to choose, I would pick this over Gunhed, Super Star Soldier of Soldier Blade - it's that good. Graphics are quite simple but do the job nicely and there's no slowdown, no matter how many powerups you have and how many enemies are onscreen. Even though you lose all your powerups when you die (as in Gradius or R-Type), I feel that the game has a great balance, which is helped by the fact that your ship only has one speed, and when you die a couple of times in the same place, you then get moved about 30 seconds back into the level, giving you more of a chance to get back into the game. Awesome! If you've never player Kyukyoku Tiger but love the Toaplan games like Tatsujin or Seibi's Raiden and Raiden Fighters games, then you'll fall head over heels for this... it's one of those rare games which videos can't seem to do justice because it's more than the sum of it's parts, and a video can only go so far to giving you a real feel for the game. Whenever I play Kyukyoku Tiger, I always end up questioning if shooters ever really got better after this golden age. As amazing as modern games like Musihimesama Futari and Espgaluda are, are they really any better and more enjoyable than this or Tatsujin? I don't think so.
